The Nechako Plateau, located in central British Columbia, Canada, hosts many significant mineral deposits including Artemis Gold’s Blackwater Au-Ag Project, Centerra’s Mt Milligan Cu-Mo Mine and inactive Endako Mo Mine, Imperial Metals’ historical Huckleberry Cu Mine, the historical Equity Silver Mine, and Silver Queen Deposit. The area is underlain by Cretaceous and Tertiary aged volcanics, sediments in addition to coeval to younger igneous intrusions.
In the early 2000s Kootenay Silver embarked upon a regional generative/targeting program in the North American Cordillera aimed at identification of under-explored, highly prospective regions in Canada, USA and Mexico. The Nechako region was recognized as a high priority exploration area, with favourable geology, existing mineral deposits of significant proportions and a low percentage of mineral tenure coverage.
The region is well forested and characterized by rolling to moderate terrain. Outcrop exposure is often obscured by glacially deposited overburden, though recent wildfires and logging activities have exposed many areas previously inaccessible. Despite the low percentage of outcrop over this region, the geological and structural setting is considered highly prospective for the discovery of new, significant economic deposits.
After a decade of reconnaissance and generative work, the Kootenay team has generated six highly prospective early-stage mineral exploration properties in the Nechako, three which are currently under option to Thompson Creek Metals Inc, a fully owned subsidiary of Centerra. Kootenay continues to identify and stake mineral properties in the region.
